OpenSocial is an open standard originated by Google to build social applications. Version 0.5 was released in November and 4 social sites have implemented it for developers to play with. A total of 18 sites [http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/partners.html] representing more than 200 million users have stated they will implement it.
After its initial announcement, OpenSocial went from the Inflated Expectations to the Trough of Disillusionment. See Gartner Hype Cycle [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hype_cycle].
Patrick will update us on how OpenSocial is charging hard on the Slope of Enlightment, explain what is new in version 0.6 and what to expect in the future and show you how to develop an OpenSocial application today.
And for those interested in hosting your own 3rd party platform, Patrick will introduce ShinDig, the open source server hosted in the Apache Shindig project [http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/shindig/trunk/]. Patrick will explain the state of Shindig today and show how to build and test it yourself.
