The History Center’s new exhibition “Waste Not Want Not: Richmond’s Great Depression, 1929 - 1940” examines Richmond’s efforts to overcome economic calamity in the early part of the 20th century. In the midst of the wrenching economic dislocations of the Great Depression, Richmond residents joined other Americans in an explosion of political, organizational and cultural creativity. The exhibition tells the story of Richmond during this time with objects, images, ephemera and costumes from the History Center’s collection.
The second in a series of three exhibitions focused on Richmond’s 20th century history, “Waste Not Want Not” succeeds “Battle for the City: The Politics of Race 1950s-1970s,”which closes on September 13, 2009. “Waste Not Want Not” will be on view through August 2010.
