Artist's Talk at Twelve Gates
January 16, 4-6pm
Naeem Rana comes from a family of Urdu calligraphers and his skill has become an identifying feature in his art, which tends to be bold and conceptually political. He studied at the National College of Arts in Lahore before pursuing post-graduate studies at the Victorian College of Arts in Melbourne. In this new series of work he has employed poetry and calligraphy to create nostalgia and a sense of displacement. 'bulbul ka bacha' is a children's poem written by one of the greatest Urdu poets, Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum (1899-1978). Rana has embellished the words of the poem with his own poetic additions. Naeem Rana currently resides in Australia with wife/artist Nusra Latif Qureshi
