Massimo Audiello NIGHT SHIFT, a solo exhibition of Kevin Cooley. The exhibition will open on Thursday, January 11 and run through Saturday, February 17, 2007. The opening reception is Thursday, January 11 from 6 to 8 pm.
Kevin Cooley's photography enjoys the knowledge of a sophisticated technique, and based on this solid ground his work adventures around the globe searching simultaneously for common and unusual circumstances.
The commonality is in his interest in the almost classical landscape tradition: large horizon, big skies, and endless views.
The unusual has to do with his knowledge of lights and exposure and all the possible results that such techniques can allow you.
Thanks to this artifice, a simple nightscape is transformed into a mesmerizing Òwishing up at the starsÓ type of situation. Lonely dreams and hopes seem to take a visible presence and all the wishful thoughts go up into the skies searching for their mates.
Kevin Cooley's ambition has brought him to the farthest habitable places on Earth, such as Longyearbyen, Svalbard, just to catch the most peculiar light, and again it is in these solitary settings that he seems the most comfortable and at ease.
To be a photographer for Cooley is a lonely, meditative experience, and this show is the result of such deep contemplation.
Born in Torrance California in 1975, Cooley was raised in Boulder, Colorado. Moving to New York City in 1997, he received his MFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2000 and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Local exhibitions include solo shows at White Columns and Momenta Art in Brooklyn. He is a recent Rema Hort Mann grant recipient and is currently an artist in residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Workspace program.
