"Coins of Antiquity," a collection of coins of the ancient Mediterranean, will be on display at the Branigan Cultural Center April 6 - 28. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 6 from 5 - 7 p.m.
Included in the exhibit are coins of Julius Cesar and the House of Constantine, as well as coins mentioned in the Bible. The private collection on loan to the museum also displays coins from Greek city states, Alexander the Great, and Ptolemaic Egypt from the 32nd Dynasty.
In addition to their token value, the coins are miniature works of art fashioned with gold, silver, bronze, ceramics and glass. As with fine art, there are counterfeit coins made, and a few of these are in the exhibit.
The Branigan Cultural Center galleries are free of charge and open to the public Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. BCC is located at the north end of the downtown mall at 501 N.
