Until October 31st 2003...
This is one of the finest times of year to visit San Francisco, not just because the summer fog gives way to clear skies and mild temperatures. October is the month when the city?s artists throw open the doors of their studios every weekend and invite the public to come in and see their work. Some 800 artists participate, both emerging and established talents, and their work includes paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, furniture, glass, textiles and installations. Much of the work is for sale; last year about $1.3m worth of art was sold.
Open Studios began in 1975 when a small group of artists decided to make their work space accessible to the public. The free event, which attracts more than 60,000 visitors each year, is also a great way to glimpse some of the city?s more bohemian enclaves. Each weekend is devoted to a different neighbourhood, so visitors can wander through the lofts and warehouses of South of Market, or the artists? community at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.
Studios are open from 11am-6pm on Sat and Sun in October. A free guide can be found at Bay Area bookstores. For more information, visit the event's website:
