OneWebDay - Milwaukee September 22, 2008

The first-ever Milwaukee celebration of OneWebDay, billed as “Earth Day for the Internet,” is set for Sept. 22 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Spaights Plaza (outside the UWM Union at 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Milwaukee event is open to the entire community, and will be streamed live for those who can’t make it to campus. OneWebDay organizers locally and internationally are spreading the word through Facebook, Twitter and other new and traditional channels.

In addition to a panel discussion on Internet issues and opportunities, the UWM event will include live music, light refreshment and interactive fun and learning opportunities. Fore example, participants can learn how to edit and improve Wikipedia or edit their privacy settings on Facebook.

Experts from the School of Information Studies and Department of Anthropology will discuss such Internet phenomena as social networks, online life, gaming and virtual worlds. They’ll also look at the complex policy, ethical, information poverty and privacy issues developing as part of the Internet’s growing globalization. Panel participants include Zimmer, Johannes Britz, dean of the School of Information Studies, Thomas Malaby, associate professor of anthropology, and Anthony Hoffman, SOIS graduate student.
