"one l wən l" Mary Beth Shaw Art Show April 4, 2009

Mary Beth Shaw explores the reciprocal relationships between the individual and the collective in her new series of 40 abstract paintings on view at phd gallery, 2300 Cherokee St. The paintings, ranging in size from 9” x 9” to 54” x 54,” will be on exhibit from March 7, to April 4, 2009, with an opening reception for the artist on Saturday, March 7, from 6 to 10 p.m.

Shaw's mixed media paintings examine the idea of intersection and connection. Her tactile surfaces combined with her use of an organic, light infused palette and the repetition of symbols, shapes, and texture suggest an essence of place rather than a specific location.

The artist works on canvas, paper and claybord combining drawing with painting and collage, using pastel, ink, acrylic and marker to create her pieces. Her process is wet and spontaneous; she directs paint flow with a spray bottle and hair dryer, building layer after layer in a ritualistic fashion. Shaw focuses on the physicality of her media along with the intuitive experience of making each piece. The final product becomes a record of that activity.
