If you thought you knew the story of "The Princess and
The Pea," you may be in for a walloping surprise as Mainstage Center
for the Arts presents Getting To Know "Once Upon A Mattress" on
Wednesday, July 25th, at 7:30 pm , and Thursday and Friday mornings,
at 10:30 am, in the air conditioned comfort of the Dennis Flyer
Theatre, Lincoln Hall, located on the Blackwood Campus of Camden
County College, 200 College Drive, Blackwood, New Jersey.
This musical, seventy minute, adaptation of the fairy tale
"The Princess and the Pea" takes some wonderfully funny twists and
turns. Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred (Caitlin
Weaver of Cherry Hill) actually swam the moat to reach Prince
Dauntless the Drab (Collin Schuck of Erial)? Or that, in fact, it
wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night?
Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous,
romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of
royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting
shenanigans. Chances are, you'll never look at fairy tales quite the
same way again.
