The Slyboots School of Music and Art present two original, unique cultural experiences of music, drums and dance at the Mercury Café in January.
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 2 On the Sly “Unplugged” features the original jazz fusion trio, On the Sly, from Buffalo, NY. This event is free.
On the Sly consists of band members Mike Colin Sisto on guitar, vocals, mandolin and banjo, Griffin Brady on percussion and vocals, and Andrew Moore on bass, vocals and guitar. In 2006 On the Sly had their first ever music festival, On the Sly's 3 sweet days. The homegrown fest was a hit featuring 15 bands. The Slyboots School of Music just hosted Slyfest V this past august with over 1500 in attendance- 25 bands- a team of visual artists and interactive music, dance and art workshops. On Friday, January 14 at 7 p.m. The Slyboots School of Music and Art presents members of the SAAKUMU Dance Troupe of Ghana. West Africa at the Mercury Café, 2199 California St., Denver. Admission is only $5.00.
In June of 2010 the Slyboots Staff, including some members of Buffalo Based On the Sly, and a small group of students traveled to the Dagara Music Center in Ghana, West Africa. The group’s residency was filled with hands on instruction and complete immersion into West African music and culture.
The award winning Saakumu Dance Troupe is one of the leading traditional/contemporary music and dance groups of Ghana, West Africa. Led by master musician, Bernard Woma, and music performed by On the Sly, the groups repertoire spans genres from spiritual, ceremonial and recreational to contemporary African dance forms. At the Slyboots School, all students will have access to affordable instruction on any instrument, drum rental, band coaching, visiting artist and musician workshops, rehearsal and studio space, a live concert venue, art gallery, booking opportunities, web design, merchandise design, tour management, bus rental and an on site recording facility complete with record label. www.OnTheSly.org
