A night of glorious music as Band on the Wall welcomes the man commonly credited as the father of UK Neo Soul to its stage. Followed by soul party with DJ Chris Jam please keeping it soulful on the decks till late.
Touring in anticipation of his seventh studio album The Man, Omar has been one of the major voices on international soul scene for over two decades. With six albums to his name – and over half a million record sales along the way, his massive and much-loved hit There's Nothing Like This announced the arrival of a major new talent when it smashed it way through UK Singles Chart back in 1991. Encapsulating what was to become the new sub-genre of soul, his fresh sound combined Latin, funk, reggae, soul, jazz and orchestral arrangements and established him as a major player on the neo soul scene.
Always pushing the boundaries of soul music, over the years he's worked with artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Kele Le Roc, Angie Stone and Common. His recent album Sing (If You Want It) is considered to be a modern soul classic. In 2006, the Urban Music Awards presented Omar with the Best Neo Soul Act and Outstanding Achievement Awards. In 2011 he was nominated as Best UK R&B/Soul Act t the MOBOs and this year he received an MBE for his outstanding services to music.
Touring on the back of forthcoming album The Man (featuring guest artists Zed Bias, King P, Dru & Perez and Live Tropical Fish), we are delighted to welcome this major name in British Soul to The Band. Support tonight features the wonderful voice and fresh soul sound of Thabo and the Real Deal.
