The GodFather of UK Soul, Omar, Live on Stage
with the Soul on the Runway Fashion Show
Sexy Couture and Live Soul Music Merge at DNA Lounge on August 17
On Sunday, August 17, DNA Lounge hosts the arrival of the legendary UK soul impresario, known to his legion of global fans simply as Omar. Omar’s first live concert in San Francisco since 2004 will begin with flare: a sumptuous collection of fashionably clad bodies sashaying to sexy R&B grooves for what has been dubbed, Soul on the Runway.
Style, soul sounds and sex appeal will merge as the jump off to a monthly soiree that finds forty some-odd young stunners rocking the latest in couture as a prelude to a national recording artiste belting and crooning R&B and soul music before a diverse and stylish crowd.
Omar’s fans include some of the most recognizable names in music. Stevie Wonder says, "When I grow up I want to be like Omar," and Erykah Badu says, “Omar is my favorite artist, ever."
Sing [If You Want It], released in 2006, brings a deeper bass tone and trunk rattle utilizing raw hip-hop production. On this album as on previous records, Omar shifts effortlessly from silky falsettos and crooning love ballads to riding the viscous rhythm of bass laden grooves. Some of his greatest fans have also been collaborators. On Sing, Stevie Wonder, Angie Stone, Common and Estelle shine alongside the godfather of UK soul. The product is an album with a groove that is infectious, driven and moving. Other collaborations over the years have included Erykah Badu, Caron Wheeler, Guru and Syreeta Wright.
Omar's stage show leaves fans and newbies alike, pining for his return. With a band that includes soulstress, Kim Hill on background vocals, veteran music director and bassist, Mike Griot and local standout pianist/emcee, Kev Choice, the show promises to electrify.
Recently voted most multi-talented musician by the Eastbay express, multi-instrumentalist, Kev Choice will follow the fashion with a rare acoustic set before MTV/VH1 Soul favorite, fashion designer/emcee, Tabi Bonney struts onto the stage to render selections from his full length, A Fly Guy's Theme, an album steeped in the tribal boom bap of A Tribe Called Quest but dipped in the flash and swagger of Kanye West. Tabi has garnered attention on his own and through collaborations with Soul artist Raheem Devaughn.
Also, the Music 4 Hunger benefit tour will be supported through canned food donations requested from patrons at the door.
