Olivier Latry, titular organist of Paris' Cathedral of Notre Dame , is one of the world's most distinguished organists; not only in France, but in the international community. Latry is an ambassador of seventeenth to twenty-first century French organ music, equally devoting his concert performances to the art of improvisation.
Augustana Arts presents Olivier Latry in “A French Extravaganza” for one performance only at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 3 at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 East Alameda Avenue, Denver. There will be a pre-concert multi-media presentation by Dr. Joseph Galema, Director of Music of the Airforce Academy at 3:00 p.m. and a post-concert reception. Olivier Latry began his study of piano at the age of 7 and his study of the organ at age 12. In 1983, at age 23, he won a competition to become one of the three titular organists on the huge Cavaillé-Coll organ of the famous Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. After becoming Professor of organ in the Catholic Institute of Paris in 1983 and subsequently at the Academy of Rheims, he succeeded Gaston Litaize at the Academy of Saint-Maur in 1990. In 1995, Latry was named professor of organ in the Academy of Paris, a post held jointly with Michel Bouvard.Today he is counted among the most noted “improvisateurs” in the exceptional French tradition from Charles Tournemire to Pierre Cochereau.
