Collector and scholar of Japanese art Oliver H. Statler was devoted to the advancement of modern Japanese prints at a time when the movement had few advocates, even in Japan. Statler's 1956 book 'Modern Japanese Prints: An Art Reborn,' was dedicated to the memory of Onchi, the man who influenced many of the other artists whose works are on view in this exhibition, including Yoshida Masaji, Yamaguchi Gen, and Sekino Jun'ichiro.
