Mobile phones have taken a great leap from the early portable military telecommunication equipment to the most popular light weight personal electronic devices. Still, we are only in the beginning of the evolution of personal communication devices. Several scenarios described by sci-fi enthusiasts have come true, and yet more is to come.
In this talk we will look at the future of mobile phones. We will discuss three areas: trends in consumer needs, evolution in hardware and connectivity features, and finally the impacts the evolution will have in the user interface elements. We will conclude by studying the implications towards product development and competences, especially from user experience, usability and ergonomy perspectives.
Speaker bio: Dr Ketola has been involved in the detailed user interface and interaction design, starting at 1995 with the Nokia communicators (Nokia 9000), and further on with Series 60-based Nokia multimedia phones. A major element in this work has been the user interface design and usability engineering with numerous development projects and new technologies. The PhD dissertation took place 2002 in the Tampere University, "Integrating Usability with Concurrent Engineering in Mobile Phone Development".
