Two of the most popular roots music acts to tour here in recent times are The Willy Clay Band and Eva Eastwood & The Major Keys…

In March, the Scandinavian theme continues when Olav Larsen and The Alabama Rodeo Stars, from Norway, arrive for a string of eagerly-awaited Scottish dates that will include a performance in Greenock.

As the name suggests, the band specialises in a unique brand of Americana, playing music so convincing that most of their radio plays happen in USA.

Olav is an extraordinary song-writer whose style has been compared to Ray Davies and Van Morrison.

Following the band’s successful participation in Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival last year, they return for a string of UK dates to promote a brand new CD.

The band has been described as “a barrelhouse of fun with fiddle, harmonica, banjo, pedal steel, piano, Fender Telecaster, bass, accordion and dobro”, all combining to produce a rich rootsy sound.

When their last album, “Love’s Come To Town” was released in 2006, UK Americana mag, Maverick awarded it a 5-star review and predicted that Olav and his merry band would soon be pulling big crowds to the bigger venues.

Since then, the band has been on a major clubs tour of America and played the legendary Borderline in London.

Olav says he is just as excited to be bringing his band back to Scotland.

“We heard on the grapevine that the Greenock audience is one of the best,” he said.

“Our good friends The Willy Clay Band have a lot of fans there and they told us to make sure it was included next time we visited Scotland.”
