Brooklyn's Dreamers are a grassroots effort by Theatre for a New Audience to build support and awareness of our green classical theatre, breaking ground in Spring 2008 in the BAM Cultural District in Brooklyn. We also seek to increase exposure and opportunities for members of the burgeoning arts and cultural scenes in the Downtown Brooklyn communities. Anyone is welcome to attend!

Join Brooklyn's Dreamers for a unique two-part Theatre event!
First, enjoy cocktails and hors d-oeuvres, a presentation of the African Yoruba drumming featured in Theatre for a New Audience's upcoming production of Oroonoko, and hobnob with the director, composer, and the incredible cast. About Oroonoko...
With vibrant words, drumming and dance based on Yoruba culture, Oroonoko tells the story of an African prince, who, along with his wife, is sold into slavery by one of their own. The play, commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1999, was adapted by Biyi Bandele, a contemporary Nigerian playwright, from the 1688 novella by Aphra Behn. She was the first professional female author in Europe, and her novella was the first in English to portray black Africans in a positive light. Bandele, however, rejects Behn's Oroonoko as an idealization, and instead explores African identity and portrays Oroonoko and other black Africans as flawed and human.
