On Saturday, March 11, 2006, robot fans and art aficionados alike will converge upon the Ontario College of Art & Design to witness the Annual Sumo Robot Challenge. Open to OCAD students, faculty, alumni and the general public, this highly entertaining competition was first brought to OCAD in 1992 by former faculty member Norman White. The event is coordinated by the Faculty of Art's Integrated Media program and is modeled after traditional Japanese Sumo Wrestling. The competition is intended to introduce students and the public to a variety of sophisticated technologies and their applications to art. In one-on-one combat, contestants must endure three rounds in which the self- or remotely-controlled robot gladiators attempt to push their opponent off the playing field - a six-foot circular platform. The winner of at least two rounds wins the match.
