Carol Irvin gets back in the ‘habit’ for a revival of her role as Mother Superior, performed at the Playhouse in ’96 & ’97. Second in command is Sister Mary Hubert, played by Lauren Marshall, with Anne Staler as the naive Sister Mary Amnesia. Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is determined to be the world’s first ballerina nun, will be played by Leila Nelson, trained “en pointe” in the Playhouse dance education program. Playhouse leading lady, Weslie Webster, rounds off the cast as her role of the streetwise nun from Brooklyn, Sister Robert Anne.
The original production of NUNSENSE, directed by Goggin, ran off-Broadway for 3,672 performances. Its ten year run became the second-longest running off-Broadway show in history (after THE FANTASTICKS, staged at CCP in 2006). NUNSENSE won four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including best off-Broadway musical, best book and best music. It was also adapted for television productions with Rue McClanahan as the Mother Superior. The New York Times called NUNSENSE “A hail of fun & frolic.”
