A thrilling concert as part of the Lively Up! Festival at the Royal Northern College of Music by the acclaimed Nu Civilisation Orchestra mixing music with a collage of multi-sensory visuals to create a tribute to the great Joe Harriott.
A bebop player at heart, Jamaican free form jazz genius Joe Harriott fused the influences of Charlie Parker with his own Jamaican musical sensibilities. He also sought inspiration from visual artists such as Picasso, believing that "most of this music is best listened to as a series of different pictures - for it is after all, by definition, an attempt in free improvisation to paint, as it were, freely in sound".
Brainchild of double bassist Gary Crosby OBE, and conducted by Peter Edwards, the Nu Civilisation Orchestra is one of the UK’s most exciting and diverse orchestras. In Parallel, this outstanding ensemble explores the interaction between musical and visual improvisation as Harriott conceived it, creating an engaging, multi-dimensional, and highly accessible tribute enriched with art created by rising star visual artist, Emma Godebska.
The result is an extraordinarily stylish, multi-media, geometrical work to stimulate the eyes and ears. Advance booking strongly recommended.
Parallel is part of the Lively Up! Festival produced by Dune Music/Tomorrow’s Warriors in association with Band on the Wall.
