When a Police Officer attends an incident in response to a call from the public, whether it’s for an every day minor offence, a critical armed incident or even a major civil contingency disaster, it is vital he/she is provided with the information necessary to manage that incident.
The investigation into the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman (both aged 10) by Ian Huntley in 2002 (the so called “Soham Murders”) highlighted the need for good intelligence record keeping and information sharing.
This presentation will take quick look at how some of the Police ICT systems support the Police in getting “the right information, to the right person, in the right place, at the right time and the right format” to support everyday policing and illustrate some of the interesting challenges faced. For example, did you know that: some information stored by the Police has to be kept for 100 years by law; much of the data stored cannot be compressed for evidential reasons; and what do you do when you need a generator at a flooded Police headquarters?
Speaker: Steve Vercella
Steve Vercella has worked in ICT for over 24 years, mostly within Financial Servers and including 5 years as a self-employed Interim Manager. However, after 20 years working in the commercial sector, he switched to the public sector and has been Head of IT at Hampshire Constabulary for 4 years.
Steve is therefore well placed to compare ICT in the commercial & public sectors and maybe their not that different!
