Ride the New York Transit Museum’s vintage fleet! Enjoy exclusive access to the Transit Museum, in Brooklyn Heights, before boarding the IND R1/9 trains for a trip east on the A line, terminating on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where we tour Arts for Transit’s “For Want of a Nail,” installation in the 81 Street-Museum of Natural History subway station. Walking tours of Central Park or the Museum wrap up the day. If you love trains, stay on board for an uptown trip and shop tour at 207th Street!

The IND Standard Revenue series subway cars known as the R1 – R9s entered operation in the 1930s. R1 cars numbered 100-399 operated on the new IND (Independent Subway) 8th Avenue line. They featured rattan seats, overhead fans, baked porcelain hand holds and poles, and a more efficient seating pattern than their predecessors, such as the IRT Low-V ("low voltage") and BMT Triplex cars. The new IND cars improved passenger loading with four pairs of individual double leaf doors as compared to three on the BMT Standards with center posts. Other BMT innovations used on the D Types such as illuminated end and side destination and lettered route signs were incorporated into the design of the IND fleet.
