Ralph/others -- I have a piece of code you might find interesting. I got alpha-blended transparency of text+multiple bitmaps working on the desktop (C#/C/DotNet). This allows for translucent "desktop widgets" in XP/98, without having to load an entire framework (samurize, konfabulator) to get it. Not sure it you care about one-off widgets.
