Although the introduction of printmaking preceded the Renaissance, it was between 1470 and 1550 that a generation of artists gained international recognition and printmaking matured as an art form. Artists and their works traveled in all directions, nurturing an interchange of ideas and techniques throughout Europe. The prints in this exhibition, produced primarily by German artists, include woodcuts, etchings, and engravings by Albrecht Altdorfer, Bartel Beham, Lucas Cranach the elder, Albrecht Durer, and others.
