The Washington Men’s Camerata, Music Director Frank Albinder, will sing music from Scandinavia as well as perform the US premier of “The Book of Life” by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara at its concert, “Northern Lights,” Sunday, March 25, 2007, 3:00 PM, Church of the Epiphany, 1317 G Street NW, Washington, D.C. (Metro Center Metro stop.)
In “The Book of Life,” the great Finnish composer Rautavaara sets texts of Dickinson, Goethe, Rimbaud, Whitman and others in a suite of eleven pieces that trace an individual’s journey through life in poetry and music. The work was commissioned by the famous Helsinki University Men’s Chorus known as YL (Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat) and has never been performed in the United States. The poetry and music are deeply moving and Rautavaara combines them skillfully to create one of the largest-scale a cappella works for men’s chorus ever written.
Other pieces featured in the program include compositions by the Norwegians Edvard Grieg and Knut Nystedt, the Swede Hugo Alfvén, and the Finns Jean Sibelius and Jaakko Mäntyjärvi.
General admission tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students. Back by popular demand, the Camerata is offering the economical “Family Ticket,” which admits 6 people to a concert performance for $60. Tickets may be purchased online at www.camerata.com or by calling 202-364-1064.
