including Convoys, Curfews, and Roadblocks, from her Bessie Award–winning work Chimurenga, an unblinking examination of her personal experiences growing up during Zimbabwe’s second War of Liberation. At the Skirball, Chipaumire will also present Dark Swan (inspired by the legendary solo made famous by ballerina Anna Pavlova), which traces the journey of one woman as she loses her bearings, her kin, and her country and descends into the borderless world of survival; and a special preview of Miriam, a newly commissioned work based upon the life of Miriam Makeba, the iconic South African singer and civil rights activist known as Mama Afrika, as well as Chipaumire’s own experiences and dreams as a self-exiled Zimbabwean.
*Arrive early and view the exhibition—Women Hold Up Half the Sky will remain open until 8:00 p.m. Program ticketholders gain free gallery admission!
