Hannelore Elsner delivers a bravura performance in depicting writer-director Roehler’s real-life mother, whose story the film is based on.
It is the fall of 1989. The Berlin Wall has fallen.
Middle-aged writer Hanna Flanders, a monomaniac intellectual, whose fame as a left wing writer is fading, is torn between her conflicting ideals and the new realities of a changing society.
Neither drugs, nor shopping sprees can cover up the pains of the eccentric woman's lonely life.
Although a reunited Germany represents the end of an ideal for her, Hanna decides to seek out a new beginning, sells everything she owns and sets out for Berlin, not even sure where she will live.

Hannelore Elsner was born in Burghausen/Bavaria.
With a filmography of more than 150 theatrical and TV feature films and countless roles in serials, this ubiquitous talent can truly be considered a German icon.
Hannelore Elsner played her first film roles as a teenager and went on to study acting in Munich.
In the sixties she worked mainly in theater and TV. Edgar Reitz (Heimat) was responsible for her return to the cinema in 1973 by casting her in “Die Reise nach Wien". After two decades on television, she was –once again- rediscovered for the big screen starring in Oskar Roehler’s "Die Unberührbare", which won her the German Film Award.
Her new film VIVERE will be released in the U.S. this spring.

We are delighted to welcome Hannelore Elsner in Los Angeles and at the Goethe-Institut.
The Goethe-Institut Los Angeles pays hommage to her talent and the release of "Vivere" with some of her recent films.
