From Accra, Ghana, sculptor, afrifone inventor, and multi-instrumentalist Nii Noi Nortey returns to Outpost for the first time since Fall 2007, when his Accra Trane Station project was featured alongside the late great Rashied Ali.
Nii Noi will perform on African flutes, xylophones, mbiras, harps, and lutes, as well as his unique afrifones (African winds with saxophone mouthpieces).
Nortey will be joined for duos, trios, and quartet improvisations by Austin and Amsterdam-based Alex Coke on alto and bass flutes; ABQ-based oud master and Grammy award-nominee, Rahim AlHaj; and UNM anthropology/music professor and renowned ethnomusicologist, film-maker, musician, and VoxLox founder, Steven Feld on ashiwa box bass. The evening will also feature a short film and rolling picture show of Nii Noi’s sound sculpture installations in Accra. Nii Noi Nortey’s 2005-2008 VoxLox CDs include Accra Trane Station’s Tribute to A Love Supreme; Meditations; and Another Blue Train. He is also the subject of the DVD Accra Trane Station: The Music and Art of Nii Noi Nortey.
