presents Night of the Assassins
by José Triana
In the playing space of their dingy basement, three siblings, Lalo, Cuca and Beba, re-enact a violent assassination in this regional premier of Night of the Assassins by José Triana. However, we do not know if they are simply "playing" or imitating a heinous crime that they previously committed, planning a murder that they will commit in the future, or simply engaging in a cathartic act to assuage the angst and suffering that lies within. Originally set in Cuba, speculation has arisen as to whether Triana wrote this provocative piece as a reaction to the cracks in the dream that began to manifest following the Cuban revolution. After all, Triana was exiled after creating this dramatic text. Nonetheless, the play is ubiquitous in theme and the questions asked resonate quite succinctly and deeply today when hopelessness, anxiety and anger latently beat beneath the fabric of our troubled society. But as one sibling reminds us, there is always hope, and that hope is love.
