National Gallery of Modern Art was opened in 1954 to house visual and sculptural work from the 1850s onwards. Although shows are few and far between, there is no denying that the gallery houses some of the finest work by modern Indian and some international artists. While the paintings on view from the permanent collection are rotated occasionally, some of the best works, including a lovely collection of Amrita Sher-Gil''s portraits and other paintings by the Tagores, remain on view.
