On 9 November the New Zealand Embassy will bring the Kiwi brand of rugby to Washington, DC with a full day of competition at Trinity University to raise funds for the sport locally. Rugby is the national sport of New Zealand and the haka, performed by the national rugby team the All Blacks, is known around the world.
Initiated in 1997, the Ambassador's Shield match pits the New Zealand Ambassador’s invitational side of New Zealand rugby players, based in the US and Canada, against an American team. The match has grown competitive over the years. After losing the first six matches, the local American side has won two of the last five including a 30-18 victory by the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union in 2006.
The event drew about 1,500 spectators last year and is now a prominent fixture on the Washington rugby calendar. New Zealanders come from all over the United States to play the match, which is considered one of the best displays of rugby on the East Coast.
