New Yorker's Jamaica Kincaid Explores Slavery's Impact on Literacy February 17, 2011

Reading and writing under slavery is a special literary place for well-known New Yorker writer Jamaica Kincaid who brings her singular perspective to the Sonoma State University campus at the Green Music Center. The event is part of the Andrea Neves and Barton Evans Social Justice Lecture Series in conjunction with Associated Students, the School of Education and the School of Social Sciences.

Born in Antigua, Kincaid has written throughout her life on colonialism and exploitation, familial relations, Caribbean culture, race, power and social injustice.

She has carved out a unique and cherished place in the American literary landscape, and her comments presented in "In a Small Space: Reading and Writing" offers her perspective on the aftermath of slavery experience on literacy, which still resounds all over the globe today.

This special evening is free for students, staff and faculty and the general public but seating is limited to 350. Advance tickets are required and are available at the Student Union (707) 664-2382.
