On Sunday August 19, the extravagant splendor of the movie palace will be the subject of a slide presentation at the Coney Island Museum, 1208 Surf Avenue. From the Paramount in Manhattan to the Loew's Kings in Flatbush, noted theatre historian Cezar Del Valle will discuss some of most flamboyant movie houses constructed in New York City.
Accommodating 2,500 to 6, 000, movie palaces allowed audiences to escape into a fantasy world beyond their wildest dreams of luxury and gilded glamour. After a brief overview of the earliest movie houses, this slide presentation traces the development of larger, more ornate cinemas; construction cresting in 1927 with the opening of the 5, 888 seat Roxy Theatre: The Cathedral of Motion Pictures.
The talk begins at 4:00pm with $5.00 suggested donation. For more information phone: 718 372 5159.
