New York Choral Society 50th Anniversary Concert April 23, 2009

The NYCS celebrates its 50th anniversary with a performance of Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem, Rossini's Stabat Mater, and the world premiere of Stephen Paulus' Whitman's New York.

Whitman's New York is a salute to this "City of the World," this "proud and passionate city" that Walt Whitman knew and loved so well. The New York Choral Society celebrates its 50th anniversary with the world premiere of Stephen Paulus's thrilling musical tribute to our "mettlesome, mad, extravagant city!"

Ralph Vaughan Williams's Dona Nobis Pacem is a deeply moving plea for peace set to biblical, poetic and political texts. It portrays an overriding message of hope and the human costs of conflict.

A choral masterpiece by an operatic master, Gioachino Rossini's Stabat Mater is a profoundly beautiful piece that received an ecstatic reaction the first time it was performed in 1842.
