Tom McDermott is one of New Orleans' most respected pianists and composers. He was born in St. Louis in l957 and began piano lessons at age six. By his early teens he was playing ragtime and New Orleans traditional jazz.
After graduating from Washington University with a Masters Degree in Music, Tom moved to New Orleans in l984. In the Crescent City he has pursued a busy career composing, arranging and playing solo piano and with bands. For most of the l990s he performed with the Dukes of Dixieland, playing around the world (and at Carnegie Hall), recording with legends like Danny Barker and releasing albums like the grammy-nominated "Gloryland."
Though best-known for his love of traditional jazz, McDermott has branched out in other areas. He began visiting Brazil in l989, and on his seventh trip in 2004 recorded "Choro do Norte," a mix of Brazilian choro and New Orleans jazz that received great reviews in the New York Times and Rolling Stone. He co-founded the modern brass band The New Orleans Nightcrawlers, which recorded two albums on the Rounder label while touring four continents. And he wrote the music for the triple-Obie-award winning Off Broadway show Nita and Zita. His work has been touted in the Chicago Tribune, downbeat, the Los Angeles Times and the New Yorker.com.
