These new and exciting works will be performed by a variety of musicians including the notable Momenta String Quartet and Sun Li who will together be performing conceptual and multifaceted composer/conductor Tan Dun’s Pipa Concerto. Tan Dun has made an indelible mark on the world's music scene with a creative repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical, multimedia, Eastern and Western musical traditions. The recipient of many awards including a Grammy and an Academy award, Tan Dun’s original compositions were selected as the official music for the Award Ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Each featured composer with the exception of Tom Cipullo and Tan Dun has been part of the Composers & the Voice program at American Opera Projects. Each season American Opera Projects selects 6 composers to work with the company’s Resident Ensemble of Singers for its nationally recognized Composers & the Voice Workshop Series. The primary focus of the Composers & the Voice Series is to give composers extensive experience working collaboratively with singers on writing for the voice.
American Opera Projects’ mission is to champion innovative works of music theatre, to expand the art form, and to identify, develop and present new works by emerging and established talent. Their goal is to create a lasting legacy of relevant music theater and to inspire new audiences with a fresh appreciation for new opera and theater.
Now in its sixth year, the Brooklyn Conservatory’s New Music Collective commissions and premieres new music while providing a professional performance forum for New York-based composers and performers of contemporary music. Nurturing contemporary and emerging composers is essential to the advancement of music and is a part of the Conservatory's artistic philosophy. Past performers in the series include David Del Tredici, Lucy Shelton, Margaret Leng Tan, and over 100 others, along with some 25 world premieres by many of New York City's leading composers.
