New Film and Media Visiting Artist Series: Shirin Neshat April 20, 2011

Women Without Men (2009)
Internationally renowned artist Shirin Neshat brings her exquisite aesthetic sensibilities as an artist to her visually stunning first feature film. Women Without Men is an adaptation of Shahrnush Parsipur’s novel chronicling the intertwining lives of four Iranian women during the summer of 1953; a cataclysmic moment in Iranian history when an American led coup d’état brought down the democratically elected Prime Minister, and reinstalled the Shah to power.

Iranian-born visual artist Shirin Neshat is known for her hauntingly beautiful explorations of Islam and gender relations. Over the past 15 years, Neshat has created provocative poetic expressions exploring the widening political and ideological rift between the West and the Middle East. Neshat’s many awards include the First International Prize at the Venice Biennale (1999) and the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in New York (2002).
