New Exhibit Opening Saturday – GROUP 212
The 1960s were many things to those who called the Woodstock area home. To Group 212, an artist community that once flourished along the Route 212 corridor between Woodstock and Saugerties from 1967 and 1969, that was precisely the point. There’s was a world of multimedia, inter-media,experimentation, and the expansion of expression through film, poetry, art, dance and theater. A world where teachers and students alike could learn from each other while creating a unique blend of art within the context of an exceptional time.
The Historical Society of Woodstock will offer a very special look at those times as it opens a new exhibit on August 8th focusing on the Group 212experience. Drawing on Woodstock’s long history of artist communities, the Group 212 exhibit, through photographs, posters and text will recall a time and a place that helped set Woodstock culture and art apart from othercommunities across the nation.
In addition to the advanced opening on August 8th, the exhibit will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Historical Society museum on lower Comeau Drive in Woodstock. On Saturday August 22, HSW will host a grand opening of the exhibit with Bob Liikala, founder of the 212 Group project, on hand to offer his reflections on the work of the group and this unique time in our area’s history.
The exhibit, co-curated by HSW president, Deborah Heppner, Letitia Smith, and HSW Board member Jean White is free and open to the public. It runs through September 6th.
