Superheroes have entered into a new realm of sophistication as it enters the art world not as a comic or cartoon, but as a impressionistic representation of a epic proportions. Beginning on November 21st, the Toonseum will host David Leblanc's first solo exhibition “New Action Evolution”t.
Pittsburgh has always been one step ahead in the world of Pop culture with local influences such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, so bringing another amazing Pop culture artist to the Toonseum will continue to build Pittsburgh's growth as a major Pop culture hub.
In the past, the Toonseum has mainly focused on comic and cartoon art, specifically original art cels and prints, so getting the chance to bring LeBlanc's impressionistic imagery to the Toonseum is a great re-imagination of the Toonseum's pop culture perspective. In other words, “New Action Evolution” is an abstract exhibit of the impression of a cartoon which has never been exhibited at the Toonseum before. .
David LeBlanc's “New Action Evolution” is a different kind of super hero exhibit, but your favorite superheroes will still be present in full regale. Leblanc was inspired by the Action Comics of the 1940's and 50's. Leblanc then took those themes and fusing them with traditional art.
His technique begins with the solid foundation of highly recognizable pop characters and symbols in which he then applies layers upon layers of paint in a swirl of symbiotic color and style.
The exhibit will feature an array of Leblanc's paintings and will run from November 21st thru January 6th. The Toonseum will also host a opening reception with Leblanc where there will be a print signing and meet & greet with the artist (TBA) .
