The National Center for Lesbian Rights launched its Anniversary Gala Dinner Dance in San Francisco in 1997 in celebration of the organization's 20th Anniversary. In its inaugural year the NCLR Gala attracted more than 1,000 lesbian major donors, allies, and corporate supporters. In 2004, the Gala sold out Moscone Convention Center, the largest dinner venue in the City, attracting 2,800 guests from all parts of the country. The celebration focused on NCLR's national leadership in the legal battle to win marriage equality for same-sex couples, and honored San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and actress Sharon Stone, among other allies and LGBT leaders.
NCLR's Gala is unique among the nation's charity events, and has earned near legendary status as the premier gathering of lesbian philanthropists in the country. The involvement of gay allies, non-gay allies, and corporate supporters has continued to grow exponentially as NCLR's reputation as a national leader on LGBT civil rights takes center stage. The event continues to honor leaders and activists in the LGBT and social justice movements, allies who stand with us, and NCLR clients whose courage to stand up for liberty inspires us all.
