Natale Tumchyasathi- Behind the Adorned Veil - Film. Directed by Savitri Medhatul. Produced by Bhushan Korgaonkar & Savitri Medhatul. This is a CHAURAHA presentation. Lavani, as a performing art, has been popular in the state of Maharashtra for several centuries. However, little is known of the women who have made lavani their lives. Through the winding journey of life with its joys and passions, this film tells the stories of Lavani dancers stories of love, pain, power, seduction, survival, expectations, dreams, and ultimately, segregation from society. Yet, through the many trials and tribulations, all these dancers are unanimous in their declaration: 'I live for one true love of my life: Lavani.' Lavani exists in two forms: the traditional Sangeet Bari and the modern Banner Shows. Sangeet Bari is governed by old customs and traditions where dancers live in theatres and perform daily. There are over thirty such theatres situated in central locations on highways all over the state, with approximately nine dance groups attached to each. Irregular daily routines, continuous dancing, heavy metal anklets and associated health problems are common. But Mohanabai Mahalangrekar sums it up simply: 'Give us the status in society that we rightfully deserve and we shall forget all our hardships.' Banner Shows, on the other hand, are relatively modern entertainment shows in the big cities, performed often by educated girls with a passion for the form. Akanksha Kadam is ready to make her daughter 'the next Lavani queen', but wishes her art enjoyed the same respect accorded to other dance forms. The film offers a fascinating cinematic glimpse into the world of Lavani, with a number of spectacular performances recorded live. There will be a discussion with the filmmakers after the screening.
