The Tornado Sirens is the competing team for Indianapolis' own Naptown Roller Girls. NRG is a group of awesome gals from Indianapolis, Indiana who want to do one thing: SKATE.
That's right. We said it. We're awesome. Here's why. Formed in 2006, The Naptown Roller Girls are a DIY flat track roller derby league, born from the Crossroads Roller Derby league, a joint Indianapolis and Bloomington group of gals who love to don eight wheels and skate.
The Naptown Roller Girls branched off from the CRD in August to form an Indianapolis-focused league, one of more than 100 flat- and banked-track roller derby leagues around the country.
Our fast and fabulous ladies have collected bruises, torn tendons, dislocated ankles and broken bones to bring roller derby to the Indianapolis area. We've been dedicated to skating, practicing, falling on our asses and getting back up to bring you action-packed bouts. For more information, head to www.naptownrollergirls.com.
What is roller derby?
Roller derby consists of two teams of five skaters each on the track. Each team has one scoring player called a jammer, who starts at the back and wears a star on her helmet. The rest of the skaters are called blockers, and they form a pack. The blockers get a head start on the jammers when the first whistle is blown; the jammers start sprinting at the sound of the second whistle. The jammers have to get through the pack and back around another lap before they can start scoring. On their second and future trips through, they get a point for every opponent they pass. Everyone else tries to stop the other teams' jammer from passing while helping their own jammer through. The team with the most points at the end of the bout wins.
What this means for you? Fun, action and excitement!
