Nagamandala is considered to be one of Karnad’s masterpieces and Neelam Mansigh’s Nagamandala is regarded (even by the playwright himself) as the best production of the play. The paly hypnotises the audiences with its narrative style, music, acting and production values and is easily among the best productions the country has seen in this decade. Nagamandala combines two folk tales, one about the story that must be told and the other about a negicted young wife whose dreams come true in the arms of a nocturnal snake-lover. Matters come to a head when Rani becomes pregnant and her husband denies being the father of the child is Naga a part of her dreams? Do we use our imagination to fill the empliness in our lives? Or does her violent husband participate in a magical reality that completes her universe?
