An American Muslim of Indo-Pakistani descent, Haji tells the story of Saira Qadar, an intelligent and rebellious young Muslim-American woman who finds herself caught in a struggle between her immigrant family’s traditions and her desire for independence. As Saira’s story unfolds, and fate intervenes in the form of unforeseen tragedy, this remarkable novel also tells the story of her family, itself bound to the struggle and violence of the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into what is today’s Muslim Pakistan and predominantly Hindu India.
