Julia Clancy Smith is a professor of History at the University of Arizona where she teaches about modern and early modern Africa and the Middle East. Among other works, she is the author of Rebel and Saint: Muslim Notables, Populist Protest, Colonial Encounters (Algeria and Tunisia, 1800-1904) (1984) and “Where Elites Meet: Sea-Bathing, Harem Visists, and Sociability in 19th-Century Tunisia,” and is co-editor of Walls of Algiers: Narratives of the City Through Text and Image (with Zeynep Celik and Frances Terpak, 2009).
