Jake Marmer’s “Jazz Talmud” is a poetry and music project with Talmudic modes of dialog, spontaneous interpretations, interruptions, arguing and the ecstatic attempts at wisdom. The poems mimic Talmudic rhetoric, style and turns of phrase as they reflect on the contemporary Jewish experience, jazz, dreams, loneliness and more. The horn players, acting as Talmud’s interpreters Rashi and Tosefot, spontaneously riff on the spoken material and each other’s reaction to it. The “Jazz Talmud” features Jewish/Jazz music pioneer saxophonist Greg Wall, trumpeter Rob Henke & keyboardist Uri Sharlin. The performance is part of the MUSIC SALON series featuring 12 diverse musical artists taking place at the cell: A Twenty-First Century Salon, from January 12 – February 12, 2011.
