A solo & collaborative recital, Kate Watts will play several solo flute & piccolo pieces in addition to duets, trios, and an antiphonal piece with 3 other flutists. The program includes pieces such as Aaron Copland’s “As It Fell Upon A Day” (flute, clarinet, soprano), the “Flower Duet” from Leo Delibes’ opera “Lakme”, a set of old American mountain tunes arranged for piccolo & piano (Gary Schocker’s “Hillsongs”, originally collected by John Jacob Niles), and an absolutely hair-raisingly beautiful introduction entitled “Dawn Carol” (arranged for multiple performers scattered throughout the performance space).
Kate Watts, the primary performer, says “My former flute instructor, Judith Lapple, passed very suddenly in August 2010. “Dawn Carol” is dedicated to her memory, as my first encounter with it was as a performance piece for Judy’s memorial celebration service in September 2010. She had a catchphrase – “LML” – which translates to “Love My Life”. She tried to instill this value, along with a love for music, in all of her students.”
Kate earned her undergraduate degree in flute performance from George Mason University, Fairfax. She is looking forward to this unurual and enjoyable repertoire as a celebration of music, friendship and love for live.
Everyone is welcome.
