Music of the Spheres Society in "Cafe Music!" April 29, 2011

Stephanie Chase, violinist, is joined by Jon Manasse, clarinetist, Sophie Shao, cellist, and John Novacek, pianist, for a concert of humorous and imaginative works composed between 1917 and 1987 by Igor Stravinsky, John Cage, Ingolf Dahl, Paul Hindemith and Paul Schoenfield – all of whom have strong American affiliations either by birth or residence.

PROGRAM:

"Suite Italienne" – Igor Stravinsky (arr. Dushkin);
“Portrait of Socrates” from "Cheap Imitation" for violin solo – John Cage;
"Concerto a tre" - Ingolf Dahl;
"Capriccio" and "The Frog He Went A-Courting" - Paul Hindemith; and
"Cafe Music" – Paul Schoenfield.
John Cage enlisted the I Ching to help write "Cheap Imitation," which was inspired by Satie's music. Ingolf Dahl's "Concerto" was premiered by Benny Goodman (his music student at the time!), Hindemith set a nursery rhyme to music and Schoenfield's "Cafe Music" was inspired by his stint as a pianist in a St. Paul Steakhouse!
