With a bold program that explores, examines and encourages, Music at the Mission presents Old World, New World. Designed to show the versatility of the double bass, an instrument frequently overlooked as suitable for chamber music, the concert features a variety of music utilizing the double bass, from nineteenth century European works to pieces created by living composers. The concert will be preceeded by a 7:15 pm pre-concert lecture and a "Meet the Artists" reception post concert.
Leading the journey through two centuries of music will be Founding Director for Music at the Mission, Aileen Chanco, piano and bassist Bill Everett, Co-Artistic Director of Music at the Mission, joined by Michael Graham, cello; and Loren Mach, percussion performing works by Rossini, Bottesini, Schumann, and contemporary composers Erb and Sydeman. Particularly noteworthy is Digital, a piece for bass, percussion and electronics written by University of California Berkeley composition faculty member Franck Bedrossian. Premiered in 2003, Digital plays off its dual meaning, eliciting thoughts of modern electronics but also referring to digits-such as fingers-and blurs the lines between acoustic and electronic sounds, the old and the new.
