This symposium will provide global perspectives on the diversity of musical practices in the world of Islam and how they articulate with local political, historical, religious, sociocultural, and aesthetic contexts. The symposium will challenge monolithic interpretations of Islam and provide a forum for understanding the multiple and complex forces that shape (and are shaped by) musical expression. Martin Stokes (Oxford University), the 2011 recipient of the Royal Musical Association's Dent Medal, will be delivering the keynote address.
